2011 NBA Championship: Odds Favor Heat and Lakers

The Miami Heat have opened at online sportsbooks as a +150 favorite in 2011 NBA odds to win the championship with the 2 time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers the next betting choice at +250. Here are the teams that I see as having a legitimate shot to win the Western Conference title for the 2009-10 NBA season, as of March 2nd.

Los Angeles Lakers: They haven’t been as dominant as they were earlier in the season, but they’re still the favorite in the conference.  Kobe Bryant has experienced some injuries, but he’s not going to let anything cause him to miss much time unless it’s really serious.  Pau Gasol continues to fly under the radar for the most part as one of the best bigs in the game.  The best thing the Lakers have going for them is their size.  With guys like Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom all capable of being on the floor at one time, the Lakers are able to overwhelm other teams with their size.

They’ve got the best coach in the league, probably in the history if the game, and are going to be incredibly difficult to beat four times in seven games.  There’s a reason that NBA Playoff tickets to see them play are so difficult to come

LeBron James is not going to exercise his player option with Cleveland for the 2010-11 season, thus making him a free agent this coming offseason.  With owners pushing for shorter contracts in the next collective bargaining agreement, James is all but assured to land a max deal in what could be the last offseason in which lengthy contracts can be awarded.

Here are the five teams that I think have a real shot at representing the Western Conference in the NBA Finals, as of April 9th.

Los Angeles Lakers: The two-time defending conference champs are not playing their best ball of the season, and while it once was somewhat of a foregone conclusion that they’d make it a third straight conference title, they’re no longer the perceived lock that they once were.  Andrew Bynum could very well be a non-factor in the playoffs for the third consecutive season and the team is struggling with point guard play.  The Lakers might be regretting failing to land a point guard at the trade deadline, when players like Devin Harris were reportedly available.  Derek Fisher has trouble guarding anyone these days and Jordan Farmar, a solid bench player, will also have a lot of trouble with some of the great point guards the Lakers are likely to face in the postseason, such as Deron Williams, Steve Nash and Jason Kidd.
